School of Sanctuary

Through the City of Sanctuary we are excited to have gained School of Sanctuary Status.

We are extremely excited that Bluecoat Aspley Academy has become the first School of Sanctuary in Nottingham! This is recognition of the brilliant work across the school, historically and currently.

Being recognised as a School of Sanctuary means our school has shown a clear commitment to making sure every child and family feels welcomed, safe, and supported to thrive. Safeguarding is our highest priority.

The Schools of Sanctuary programme is not political — it simply helps schools to understand why people seek safety and to lead with kindness and humanity.
We are proud to be a school where every child feels safe, where individual needs are understood, and where pupils are equipped to be kind and thoughtful members of our community.

We have completed applications, attended City of Sanctuary events and received a visit from delegates from City of Sanctuary to assess against their criteria.

We have also made links in order to engage with the wider vision to support Nottingham’s future aim of our city to gain recognition as a City of Sanctuary.

We look forward to having all our schools across Archway Learning Trust involved in this wonderful initiative.

Please see the website below to experience the work involved. “Building a Culture of Welcome A sense of belonging”.

City of Sanctuary UK holds the vision that our nations will be welcoming places of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution. In order to realise this vision, City of Sanctuary UK supports a network of groups, which includes villages, towns, cities and regions across the UK, and others engaged in Streams of Sanctuary, Sanctuary Awards  and activities intended to welcome people seeking sanctuary.

We have made a commitment to

  • Learn: find out what it means to be seeking sanctuary; and be actively involved in awareness raising.
  • Embed: take positive action to make welcome and inclusion part of the values of your organisation or community, to support sanctuary seekers and refugees, and to include them in your activities.
  • Share your vision and achievements: let others know about the positive contribution refugees make to our society and the benefits of a welcoming culture to everyone.
